Tomorrow morning I will board the early Amtrak train in Eugene and ride for nearly six hours up to King Street Station in Seattle. After detraining, I will walk two blocks to a hostel where I am spending the night. This is the first time I have stayed in a hostel, and I am very interested to see how it goes. A lot of people have told me that this is the "hip" thing to do for a person my age, so we'll see. If it does work out, I might consider using hostels more often as they are usually considerably cheaper and convenient than most hotels in the cities I want to visit.
After dropping my overnight bag off, I'll walk a few blocks up to the Bill Speidel Underground Tour. This is something that I have always wanted to do, but I just have never got around to it. It's supposed to be a really interesting tour of underground Seattle and the life and times of the late 19th century in the Emerald City. I've taken the Portland Underground tour and was very impressed. I'm curious to see how the Seattle tour compares.
After the tour, I'll walk south to Safeco Field for the Mariners game. Seattle is playing host to the LA Angels of Anaheim, and I'm really excited to see the matchup of pitcher Felix Hernandez for the Mariners against newly-acquired Albert Pujols of the Angels. I'm expecting a really good game that should be close. I haven't bought tickets yet because I want to really try and experience the full Safeco Field aura, which starts with buying tickets. This worked really well on the Rocky Mountain, and I'll try it again.
After the game, I really don't have anything planned. It should be done by early evening, so I'll probably get something to eat and see a movie. I really don't know, so I'll just play it by ear.
After spending the night at the hostel, I'll wake up and jump on the Sound Transit bus south to the city of Tacoma. From there, I'll make my way out to Cheney Stadium using public transit. The last time I used public transit in Tacoma was a little dicey, but I'm hoping that hitting up the day game and being a Sunday will shield me from some of the riff-raff in Tacoma. I'm also interested to walk around Tacoma a little and see the city. Hopefully I'll be able to do that.
Cheney Stadium underwent some considerable renovations since the last time I was there in 2010, so I'm really interested to see what they have done and how it makes the ballpark feel. Cheney Stadium has always been one of my favorite Triple-A parks, so we'll see if the renovations added to or subtracted from that score.
My train leaves Tacoma at around 6pm, so I'll make my way back to downtown, grab a bite to eat, and catch the train back to Eugene, arriving around midnight.
Even though I have been to both of the cities in the past, this trip should open a few new doors for me. I'm relying a lot on walking and public transportation, which always makes things interesting. This whole hostel thing will be eye-opening and interesting as well.
I'm leaving the computer at home and updating the blog using my Blackberry. It should save me some room in my luggage and make me more portable. The computer started to become a hassle during the Rocky Mountain trip, so we'll see how this pathway of social connection works out.
In addition to the blog, I will be updating all my social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare. Keep an eye out for my updates and I'll talk to you all tomorrow!
Always take on a 3-0 pitch ;)
